Fiji Zipline - Frequently Asked Questions

E-mail Print PDF

Q: What is a zipline adventure?

A: A zipline adventure is an exhilarating activity in which trained specially-trained personnel help guests with no previous experience or special skills traverse over ziplines (horizontal steel cables), from platform to platform, supported by specialized climbing equipment, to experience the forest canopy environment in a safe, entertaining way.

Q: What is a zipline?

A: Ziplines, also called ‘traverses’, are the main method of transportation through the tour and are the essence of the zipline adventure. They consist of a steel cable anchored between two points to which the participant is connected with pulleys that permit movement along the line from one side to another propelled by gravity and momentum.

Although the lines are designed so that the participant may be easily stopped at the next platform, some velocity adjustment is required on some traverses and for some participants which is achieved by the participant applying downward pressure to the line with the gloved hand.

Our double stainless steel ziplines are fastened so as to permit the equalization of tension during the participant’s progress with a retainer system that supports each line independently in case of the failure of one. Failure, however, is a remote possibility since each line can support more seventy-five times the weight of a typical guest.

Q: Do I need any previous experience or special skills to do the tour?

A: No, guests do not require any previous experience or special skill to participate in the zipline adventure as our specially-trained, English-speaking guides accompany you to facilitate your safe and enjoyable progress through the tour. The guides explain and demonstrate techniques and procedures and provide ecological, cultural or historical information as well.

Q: How do I get to Zip Fiji?

A: Our zipline adventure is located near the village of Wainadoi about half an hour from Pacific Harbour and about two and a half hours from the international airport at Nadi, on Viti Levu (Fiji’s largest island). See our Transportation and Tour Packages or Location pages more information.

Q: When does the tour operate?

A: We have scheduled group tours daily (including Sunday and holidays) year 'round, departing from our Burre at 9:30 am, 11:00 am and 2:30 pm.

If you're using your own transportation, plan to arrive at the site at least fifteen minutes prior to the start time.

Q: How long does the tour last?

A: The zipline adventure lasts about two hours, depending on the size and needs of the group.

Q: What are the minimum physical requirements to participate in the tour?

A: The zipline adventure does not demand great physical ability. However, for your safety and that of other guests all participants must:
  1. Be able to walk 15 minutes uphill over uneven ground unassisted and without walking aids and have sufficient mobility and strength to climb a 5-meter (20-foot) ladder unassisted.
  2. Weigh less than 135 kilograms (300 pounds) and fit in the equipment (harness, helmet and gloves) in a safe manner as determined by the Head Guide (maximum waist measurement 120 cm/47", maximum thigh measurement 70 cm/27", and maximum head diameter 61 cm/24").
Because body weight affects the crossing speed on the traverses and excessive speed can result in injuries, guests may be asked to weigh in prior to participation.
  3. Be able to be on a small platform approximately 5 'stories' high without experiencing excessive anxiety or reactions such as dizziness, fainting, hyperventilation, unresponsiveness or vomiting.
  4. Be at least 5 years of age and have a torso length of at least 45 cm/18". Children under legal age (18) must be accompanied by an adult. There is no maximum age.
  5. Be able to understand directions and comply with rules.
The tour is not recommended for persons with asthma, balance problems, epilepsy, heart problems, some disabilities, back, neck or shoulder problems or those who are pregnant.

Intoxicated persons or persons using drugs or medications that may affect balance, concentration, coordination or judgment, may not participate.

Q: Is there a weight or size limit?

A: Yes, the maximum weight limit for each participant on the tour is 135 kg (300 lbs). This limit is not determined by the capacity of the elements or equipment but is required because body weight affects the crossing speed on the traverses under the effect of gravity and momentum and individuals who weigh more than the limit could have difficulty controlling their speed, endangering themselves and other participants standing on the platforms.

In addition to being under the weight limit, guests must also fit in the equipment (harness, helmet and gloves) in a safe manner and as a result, some guests who weigh less than the limit may still not be able to participate if the equipment doesn't fit them correctly. As a general guideline, your waist must measure 120 cm/47" or less and your thighs 70 cm/27" or less and the maximum head diameter that our helmets will fit is 61 cm/24", nevertheless there may be other fitting constraints or centre of gravity issues that can only be evaluated in person that could preclude participation. Children must have a torso length of at least 45 cm/18". While we do not wish to exclude anyone from enjoying the tour, we reserve the right to do so if necessary to keep all our guests as safe as possible.

Please check with our reservationist if you have any concerns about this.

Q: What should I wear?

A: Wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting a little dirty or wet and that will not interfere with the adjustment of the harness or helmet. Most of our guests do the tour in shorts, T-shirt and running shoes; skirts, dresses and bathing suits are not appropriate. Closed-toe sport shoes provide the best protection for your feet however strap-on sandals are acceptable; you may not do the tour in bare feet.

Q: What should I bring?

A: Bring your camera, bottled water and insect repellent with you to the tour site. As it rains periodically throughout the day, you may want to bring a lightweight poncho or jacket or a change of clothing. Please bring a hair tie if you have long hair.

We don't recommend that you take your belongings with you on the elements since they can interfere with the equipment and you risk losing them, so we have storage area for small items at the tour site. Nevertheless you may if you wish carry a small shoulder bag, backpack or Bum Bag with you provided you understand that anything you take must be carried by you throughout the entire tour in a way that leaves both hands free.

We are not responsible for loss or damage to personal property and we cannot recover items that are dropped from the tour elements.

Q: Does the tour operate in the rain?

A: That’s part of the fun! The tour operates in all weather conditions except when there is lightning overhead, high winds or especially-heavy rain. Usually, we only wait a short time until conditions improve; however if we are unable to do the tour within a reasonable time, we will reschedule you for a later time. Keep in mind that the tour is located in a RAINforest and so a little ‘liquid sunshine’ is to be expected, but we don’t let it dampen our fun!

Q: Can two people zip on a line at the same time?

A: We don't permit tandem traversing with adults due to the potential risk of excessive velocity; however children age twelve and under can ride with a guide if desired.

Q: Can children participate?

A: Yes, children age 5 and up can participate providing they meet the minimum requirements; children under this age cannot participate because our insurance doesn't cover them. Sorry, we do not offer child care at the site. We have special equipment for children however children must have a minimum torso length of 45 cm/18" in order to fit in the equipment in a safe manner.

Q: Is it safe?

A: We have the highest safety standards in the industry. Go to our Safety Information page for more information.

  • We only use internationally-certified, superior-quality materials, components and equipment and we use conservative equipment and element capacity limits. We inspect our equipment and tour elements incessantly and document every detail.
  • Our double-line traverses and comprehensive safety line systems provide unsurpassed risk reduction.

  • Since our staff are the heart of the operation, our training program is the most comprehensive in existence. Guides receive extensive instruction and practice so they can operate the tour professionally and safely.

Q: What if I am afraid of heights?

A: Fear of heights is a normal and healthy reaction. Everyone feels nervous at the beginning of the tour and some may find the experience challenging throughout, however our guides will do everything possible to support you and to provide you with a low-pressure, achievable experience.

Please don't indulge in any 'liquid courage' prior to participating as intoxicated persons may not participate.

Q: I rock climb, can I use my own equipment on the tour?

A: No, our insurance only covers particpants who use our equipment.

Q: Will I see wildlife?

A: Participants will have a unique view of the abundant flora and fauna around the tour elements, but what we see on any given tour depends on the whims of the wildlife itself, the time of day, and the observer's luck and sharp vision!

Q: How does the tour impact on the environment?

A: Obviously this type of activity has an impact on the ecosystem in which it is located; however, we build and operate the tour to minimize that impact as much as possible. We don’t perforate trees, cut vegetation indiscriminately or alter natural structures. See our Ecological and Cultural Responsibility page for more information.

Q: If I don't want to do the Tour can I watch?

A: Unfortunately there is no area where you can observe the entire tour but you can see the start and finish. Those who do not participate can wait in our Burre or enjoy a refreshing dip in the river.

Q: Can I smoke on the tour?

A: Sorry, for the enjoyment of all participants and the protection of the equipment, elements and environment you can't smoke on the tour, however we do have a smoking area for your use just before we depart for the elements.

Q: Do I have to be very strong to do the Tour?

A: No, the physical demands are minimal; if you meet the Minimum Requirements for Participation you are strong enough to do the tour.

Q: What happens if I can't do it?

A: No one is ever pressured to participate, if after the first zip line you feel you can't continue, no problem, we'll walk you back to the Burre. If you're not able to do the tour at all, we'll give you a refund.

Q: Are there bathrooms on the tour?

A: Yes, of course!

Q: How do I make reservations?

A: Go to our Booking Page to connect by e-mail or phone 679-628-6481 or 679-930-0545.
